Antique German Violin Labelled “Carlo Bergonzi”, c.1900
Description
A beautifully-preserved antique violin. Restored in 2020, where it was estimated to be from the 1850s, further study since our acquisition of this violin indicates it to be from Germany in the early 20th century.
This instrument features pronounced arching in the top and back plates – a signature of its German style – though it is copied after the dimensions and aesthetics of the Italian maker Carlo Bergonzi, whom is credited on the inside label. With a rather petite neck and slim shoulders, this violin comfortably can suit players looking for a compromise on a 7/8 size violin.
Tried and tested by its past-owner, the sound of this violin is bright, bold, and resonates deeply – in particular for the lower strings – and projects a clear tone across all positions of the fingerboard. A truly perfect violin for the next step in a players’ journey, or potentially a life-long companion.
